For the Spring 2013 program they are accepting students from grades 7-8 for the middle school films teams and students from grades 9-12 for the high school film teams.*

* This year middle and high school film teams will be separated by age but 9th grade students may join either age group. Admission is first-come, first-served based on when your on-line application is received.  Priority will be given to students who have not participated in the program before and a minimum of 4 spots will be held for grades 9-12.

About the Huliau Environmental Filmmaking Club

The HEFC program is a semester-long after school club program serving up to 12 students. The program meets Mondays after school at the Hawaiian Canoe Club in Kahului.  Students work in film teams of 3-4 students.  Each film team will also schedule 3-6 off-site filming sessions (up to 4 hours in length) throughout the island.

Maui Huliau Foundation staff assist students in investigating environmental or conservation- related issues affecting their community.  The students conduct research, plan a storyline, film in different locations around the island, and turn what they learn into short film.  At the end of the school year, students will help plan our annual Huliau Youth Environmental Film Festival, where their films will be shown.  After the festival, we also help students enter their films in different national film festivals.  Last year’s student films have already been selected to be shown at four national film festivals!

Huliau Environmental Filmmaking Club Program Details

Who may apply:

The program is open to all Maui students ages 12-18 years old.  For our spring 2013 program we are accepting students from grades 7-8 for our middle school films teams and students from grades 9-12 for our high school film teams.  Film teams will be separated by age but 9th grade students may join either age group.

Admission is first-come, first-served based on when we receive your on-line application.  Priority will be given to students who have not participated in the program before and a minimum of 4 spots will be held for grades 9-12.

The program fee is $75.  Need-based scholarships are available.

The application process:

1. Fill out an application on-line (see button in left sidebar https://www.mauihuliaufoundation.org/hefc )

2. You will receive a confirmation email when your application is reviewed.  If registration for that semester has not yet begun, your place in the program will be held based on when your on-line application was received.

3. A Maui Huliau Foundation representative will contact you to let you know that registration for the program is beginning.  They will assist you in filing out the proper registration forms and waivers.  They will also help you determine if you should enroll in the MEO transportation program, and if so, assist you with enrollment.

4. Students will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis based on when their completed registration documents and program fee are received.

Location:

Maui Huliau Foundation has partnered with the Hawaiian Canoe Club to host the HEFC program at their classroom in Kahului. Maui Economic Opportunity’s Youth Transportation service provides free transportation to and from the canoe club from public schools throughout the island!

Club Meeting Times:

Club Meeting Times Club hours are from 3:00- 5:15pm every Monday (except holidays). For the first two weeks of program, we also meet on Tuesdays. For the last month of program students take turns editing their film and only come in every other week.  Please see the left sidebar for a pdf of the full program schedule.

In addition, each film team will schedule approximately 3-6 off-site filming sessions during school break (fall or spring), weekends and/or after school.

Transportation:

For regular Monday club sessions, MEO youth transportation drops students at the Hawaiian canoe club between 2:45 & 3:15pm and picks them up between 5:00 & 5:20pm.  Students who arrive by 3:30pm with their own transportation and can stay until at least 5:15pm are also welcome to participate.  Contact us if you have any questions.

Students can also use the Maui Bus and walk across to the Hawaiian Canoe Club from Ka’ahumanu Shopping Center.
