Providing a high quality, Christ-centered education.

Surrounded by the beauty of the Island of Maui, in Kahului, is a Pre-K to Grade 8 school with a Christ-centered curriculum devoted to the life-long learning of the whole child in a changing world. Guided by the Lutheran Church’s educational emphasis, Emmanuel Lutheran strives for academic quality and individual student achievement.  Care and support for each other comes naturally in Emmanuel’s ohana environment for students, teachers and staff. Its school-wide integrated curriculum has helped students consistently test strong in the national SAT-10. Student interests develop through strong programs in music, Spanish, computer instruction, physical education, and the core subjects.

History

Emmanuel Lutheran School has been on Maui since the mid-1980s.  The church was built in 1971 and the preschool program followed a year later.  The grade school was not added until the mid-1980s when the church built the 7 classroom building to house the school.  The preschool continues to run inside of the sanctuary.  The church added a two room modular when enrollment demanded it in 2003.  This modular houses sixth and seventh grade.  The school purchased land to build a bigger school and church in 2005 and is currently in the process of raising the funds necessary to complete the new campus.  The school is thriving with a student body that reflects the diversity of our island.  We have a teacher student ratio of 13:1 students to teachers.

Our Mission

The purpose of Emmanuel Lutheran School is to share the good news of Jesus Christ by providing a high quality, Christ-centered education.

A Tradition of Education

Emmanuel Lutheran School is a partner school with six other Lutheran grade schools in Hawaii and over 2,345 Lutheran elementary and secondary schools throughout the United States.

Emmanuel Lutheran School is licensed by the Hawaii Council of Private Schools. A number of our teachers are graduates from Lutheran universities and all of our teachers hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

Emmanuel Lutheran School is committed to serving you and your children.  This commitment is motivated by a desire to serve our Lord through our individual ministries.  It is important that you are aware of this desire to serve and of the high level of our commitment, because we also need your commitment, support, encouragement, and prayers.

Emmanuel Lutheran School is a part of the mission and ministry of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The congregation is therefore responsible, through the Board of Education, for the operation of our school.  All matters of school policy require approval by the Board of Education.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church has been serving Maui since 1967.  The congregation added the preschool program in 1972 and the grade school program in 1978.  The name “Emmanuel,” which our congregation has chosen for itself, means “God is with us.”  We believe that He is with us and that He will bless the labors of our hands and hearts.

Emmanuel Lutheran School reflects the ethnic  diversity that is found in Hawaii.  Emmanuel also has students from a variety of different religious backgrounds.  And though we are a Lutheran School sponsored by a Lutheran Church, we are not here to serve only Lutherans. Emmanuel wishes to provide a Christian education to all families who wish a quality Christian education for their children.

Academics

booksOur classrooms are centered on the belief that each child is capable of doing three things: learning, leading by example and serving. At Emmanuel Lutheran School you will find challenging academics and a focus on individual learning. We believe our program provides a greater opportunity to learn at a rate and level most appropriate to each student in the core subjects of math and language arts.

Curriculum

The adopted curriculum at Emmanuel Lutheran School is based on Core Knowledge. Core Knowledge is a guide that outlines specific sequential content that introduces the child, grade by grade, to the accumulated knowledge that has formed our culture. This curriculum is a sequential study of content that each student should learn at each grade level before advancing into the next grade level.

Religious Instruction – Students at Emmanuel have the special opportunity to study God’s Word on a daily basis in the classroom. Students participate in daily devotions and use instructional materials prepared for us in Lutheran Schools by our church denomination. Special emphasis is given to applying God’s Word to our everyday life. Students have the opportunity to worship together with our preschool in a weekly chapel service.

Language Arts – A great amount of time in elementary school is spent in the area of language arts. This includes listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. From reading their first book to the study of literature, and from writing their first sentences to composing a formal composition, the students are learning effective communication skills necessary in our complex world. We include a strong basic phonics program in the early grades.

Mathematics – Students at Emmanuel learn not only basic math facts, calculation, computation, geometry, and pre-algebra, but also how to problem-solve and apply the logic of math to math-related problems they are likely to encounter. Some students qualify to take algebra in 8th grade. Entrance into this course is based on the student’s SAT scores, grade, and teacher recommendation. The learning environment is often one in which the teacher facilitates the discovery process, providing the props, tools, or materials learners can use on their own to instigate and stimulate learning.

History/Geography – We are concerned with people and their relationships to God, each other, and the world in which they live. From home and community to our state, country, and world, students study the history and culture of people. Students at Emmanuel stay abreast with current events and geography to better understand the world in which they live.

Science – Our teachers direct students to the evidence of God’s love, wisdom, and power. Through the study of the universe and the biological and physical sciences, students have the opportunity to experience God’s creation. Our curriculum offers many opportunities for hands-on experiences.

Health and Physical Education – In our study of health we encourage development of positive life skills. The focus in our P.E. program is on fostering personal life-long fitness activities, encouraging children’s sense of self-confidence in order to achieve them.

Music – We offer music/choir classes for grades Kindergarten through six. The 7th & 8th grades will have choir during the 2nd & 4th quarters of school. Students in grades K-8 are expected to participate in two special School Sunday Worship Services each year and in our annual Christmas and Spring musicals. These programs provide opportunities for developing performance skills and for praising God through music and drama.

Band – Advanced Band is offered to all 6th-8th grade students who have prior band experience or permission from the instructor. All fifth grade students are required to take an introduction to musical instruments course.

Art – Emmanuel offers an arts program in each grade to foster creativity and cultivate appreciation. We believe that each child is endowed by God with creative talent, and though this talent may vary, it is our goal to nurture it and encourage its growth.

Computer Education – Emmanuel Lutheran has a centrally located, networked computer lab equipped with MAC Mini’s and HD monitors. Students will be introduced to computer skills at age appropriate levels through our curriculum.

Mahalo for your interest in our preschool!

We believe that God has given every human being a marvelous potential for leading a creative and successful life in this world. Your child, in his/her preschool years, is growing rapidly in all aspects of his/her life. We believe that effective guidance and teaching at this young age must involve the total person. Therefore Christian values are integrated into our entire daily program.

We see a need for a well-planned learning curriculum to guide your child’s intellectual, social, and spiritual growth, as well as a need for all-day care for his/her physical and emotional well-being. Our program includes music, art, physical education, number readiness, reading readiness, social studies, science, as well as Bible story time. We will attempt to serve the best interests of your child at all levels of our operation. Children who turn 5 years of age between August 2 and December 31 will be eligible for our kindergarten on a space available basis.

Incoming kindergartners are required to participate in an Observation Day. Children interact with peers and teachers through stories, outside play, art and free choice activities. They will also participate in a developmental screening test to determine readiness for the kindergarten year.
