Screen Shot 2014-06-15 at 12.22.45 AMIt can be hard to tear kids away from their smartphones but Stand Up Paddling (SUP) might be the answer. The sport is easy to learn as the boards are more stable than traditional surfboards. Accessible for even young children, the sport has also entered the competitive sport ranks in Hawaii and all over the world. Boyd Jeffery, a Maui local, has announced the Honolua Surf Co.’s Ultimate SUP Showdown, a three-day competition August 16-18 at Waikiki Beach. Athletes like Connor Baxter and Kai Lenny, who have loved the water since they were kids, are scheduled to compete in the world’s first surf-race. Jeffery, who also has a seven-year old son, is offering a kid’s clinic at the event designed to get kids safely out on the water on Rogue SUP paddleboards. Maui kids belong outside and in the water. Maybe one of yours will become the next Connor Baxter!
