RootsMiddleSchoolStudents3Eleven years ago when Melita Charan started Roots School in Haiku, she and her six students wanted to do a special holiday event to bring together families. However, their tiny one-room schoolhouse in the jungle was not large enough. One of the school’s families volunteered their home, and the students happily sang songs and recited poetry.  It was the joyful start to a new tradition. Over time, the school grew to 60 students and moved into a larger building in Haiku.  The holiday event also began to grow and became known as the Children’s World Fair. Each year the celebration holds games, crafts, food, music and performances. This year, the fair is on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM at Makawao Union Church.  The school board and auction chairs Luke and River Siver are pleased to announce that the proceeds from this year’s auction will start a new financial aid program.  For information, call 250-7988 or visit www.rootsmaui.org.
