Junior Lifeguard Program

The County of Maui Department of Parks & Recreation is looking for a few good young men and women to take part in their 2012 Junior Lifeguard Program.

The program is being offered to all young adults, 13 to 17 years of age, on Maui and Lanai, along with a separate session for Hana. Space is limited and varies at each location. Please note that all participants must meet the age requirements by 12/31/2012.

All those applying for the program will have to pass a swim test at the time of registration. The test consists of swimming 300 meters, non-stop, within an 11 minutes.

Overview
The two-week Junior Lifeguard program was designed to train boys and girls ages 11 to 17 in lifesaving water skills and to develop an awareness of beach hazards and ocean conditions.

Participants will become familiar with First Aid and CPR techniques, while improving their health and fitness. Both beach and pool programs will be offered on Maui and beach programs will be offered in Hana an Lanai.

Goals and Objectives

  • Provide training in Ocean Safety and rescue skills
  • Develop a knowledge of First Aid and CPR techniques
  • Improve health and fitness of youth
  • Teach team work and good sportsmanship
  • Help develop and train future lifeguards

Registration locations, time and dates are as follows:

• In North, South and West Maui there will be two separate Jr. Lifeguard Program sessions. Session I is from June 25 to July 6 and Session II will be held from July 9 to July 20. Registration for both sessions will be held on Saturday, April 28 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Baldwin Beach Park in Paia, Kamaole I in Kihei and Hanakao’o (Canoe) Beach Park in Lahaina. Maui session registrants will be accepted on a first come/first serve basis.

• The Hana session will be held Monday, June 4 to Friday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hana Bay. Registration forms maybe picked up at the Dept. of Parks & Recreation office in Hana or online at www.mauicounty.gov. The Hana session is limited to the first 20 qualified participants.

• The Lanai session will be held Monday, June 18 to Friday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hulopoe Beach. Registration forms are available at the Dept. of Parks & Recreation office in Lanai or online at www.mauicounty.gov. Forms are due back at the Lanai parks office no later than May 20. The Lanai session is limited to the first 15 qualified participants.

Training consists of familiarizing students with water safety skills, CPR, first aid, surf and rescue techniques, ocean swimming, paddle boarding and lifesaving skills.

Although the program is free there is a suggested donation of $15. Those interested in making a donation are asked to write out a check to Hawaiian Lifeguard Association – Maui Chapter.
