Finding the right school entails knowing what kind of educational philosophy and type of curriculum each school practices and seeing if it’s the right fit for you and your child. All the schools on Maui are  unique and give parents a lot of choices. We hope that we can begin to show parents some of those characteristics and  encourage them to take a deeper look at all the great schools on Maui.

Preschool – Grade 8

Haleakala Waldorf School believes that quality begets quality, and that education is an act of transformation. Combine intellectually curious students with outstanding teachers in a program that is both academically challenging and personally supportive, and the results are extraordinary. We consciously offer a substantial, developmentally based program to our students building a solid foundation layer upon layer as it progresses through the years.

• Academics— At Haleakala Waldorf School, the curriculum takes an interdisciplinary approach with a focus on experiential learning.  We provide a classically well rounded curriculum (history, math, language arts, the sciences, foreign languages and Hawaiian studies) encompassing both depth and breadth.

• The Arts— Academics come alive conveyed through an artistic medium.  We seek to cultivate a life long love of learning by integrating our rigorous academic curriculum with the arts — visual, dramatic, music, and movement.  Children’s imaginations and curiosity are engaged as each subject area is felt and experienced in addition to being contemplated intellectually.

• The Whole Child— The pursuit of intellectual growth is complemented by a concern for the moral, physical, psychological and aesthetic development of each student. Community service, affective education, performing and visual arts, physical fitness and athletics are all integral parts of the Haleakala Waldorf School curriculum.

• Outstanding Faculty— Haleakala Waldorf School students are inspired and supported by an exceptional faculty. Our teachers are the heart of the school. They provide context, content and coherence to the learning environment, serve as role models and shape students’ lives forever.

The Haleakala Waldorf School experience is as extraordinary as your child.  Our vision is for our students to blossom into young adulthood fulfilling their own individual potential and preparing to take their places as creative, self-directed members of our global society.  They learn to think independently and work collaboratively. They develop confidence, courage and tenacity. They acquire leadership skills and the desire to make a difference in the world.  Waldorf education is an education of the complete human being.

Beginning in kindergarten, your child’s education takes place in small classes in an  environment which encourages respect, responsibility, and self-confidence.  The Carden Method is a comprehensive, sequential, traditional curriculum that integrates phonics, spelling, grammar, reading, and writing. This strong foundation of academic skills enables students to think critically and express themselves clearly in the study of math, science, social studies, and literature.

The basic curriculum is interwoven with visual art, dance, drama, music, foreign language, technology, and physical education.  This array of activities allows for the expression of individuality.

Character development is built into the learning environment, which focuses on stamina, good sportsmanship, and the development of personal responsibility, while avoiding pressure and rivalry.  Self-esteem and confidence for lifelong learning are instilled in each Carden student.  Our students, teachers, staff, and parents treat each other with respect and dignity.

Carden Academy’s Middle School program challenges students through its core curriculum with English, Math, and Science taught daily. Primary – Grade 8

Montessori Hale O Keiki (MHOK) has expanded this year to include a second primary classroom and a middle school.

Partnering with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Sanctuary on Maui, MHOK’s middle school students will engage in a project-based service-learning science program.  The students will be outside the classroom for one out of every six weeks working toward a science project they will design in conjunction with the educational programs department of the National Marine Sanctuary.

The aim of the weeks outside the classroom is to give the middle school students an opportunity to connect classroom learning to the world at large through their own efforts and collective accomplishments of a predetermined aim. The projects will be designed to benefit the community at large and the information will be banked and relied on for future Marine Sanctuary projects.
