31st Upcountry Fair
It will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12, 2011 at the Oskie Rice Field & Arena on Olinda Road in Makawao.
This year’s theme is Nana ‘Ike Kumu (Look to the Source), which celebrates the upcountry ranching and farming lifestyle that is unique to Maui while creating opportunities for Maui’s youth to develop an interest in agriculture, animal husbandry and ranching.
The Upcountry Fair always features a wide array of activities, displays and events which appeal to kids of all ages. Highlights include the Maui 4-H Livestock Association’s annual animal show and sale in which Maui’s youth present the farm animals they have raised for the year and offer them for sale at an auction. There will be a Pie Eating Contest on Saturday, June 11 and Hot Dog Eating Contest on Sunday, June 12. Haleakala Ranch’s Entertainment Tent presents Maui’s favorite performers, George Kahumoku Jr., Benny Uyetake, The Shamrocks and Jah Residentz on Saturday. Sunday entertainment continues with Uncle Richard Ho‘opi‘i and his ‘ohana, the Hawaiian Serenaders, ‘Ukulele Pops Band, Country Band and Marty Dread. Halau hula will also perform on stage each morning and Kathy “Tita” Collins will serve as M.C. on Saturday. The Upcountry Ag & Farm Fair is for everyone, so join in the fun for one day or two and make sure you bring the whole family!

What’s Growing in Your Garden? Art Program for Keiki
Using acrylic paint, help make a mural inspired by the diversity of plants and animals found in Hawaii. The mural will be installed in the Children’s Area. Children will also create garden-inspired artwork to take home. All materials provided. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Zenshin Daiko will be performing some new pieces and some old favorites. This concert will feature the premiere of a piece composed by professional taiko artist Shoji Kameda. Shoji is a member of On Ensemble and Hiroshima. The concert will also feature Kenny Endo’s children’s group, the Taiko Center of the Pacific – Youth Group.
