Summer time means the kids are out of school and many families are hopping on a plane to go see family or have some mainland fun. But we live on Maui, where millions of people come to enjoy their vacations. Here are five “staycation” ideas to do with your family this summer.

1. Beach it staycation

Maui has some of the most gorgeous beaches on the planet. Use summer as a time to explore those that may be a little farther away from you on the island. Best of all, beaching it is free! Pack a lunch and make it a daylong beach extravaganza!

2. Head to Hana

It’s amazing that just one very long car ride (and no airport security) can transport you to a faraway land. Hana, with its lush greens, waterfalls and culture, is an amazing place to have a family weekend getaway. Rent a tiny cottage, bring your own food, and let your keiki enjoy a piece of old school Maui.

3. Find a hotel deal

Maui is home to some of the most amazing resorts, and thankfully, many of them offer kama’aina deals. Simply give your favorite resort a call and ask for their specials.

4. Backyard campout

If a long drive or hotel stay aren’t in the budget, set up camp right there at home. Kids love sleeping in a tent, even if it’s in the living room or backyard. Go all out with hot dogs, chili and make-your-own trail mix bar. Be sure to take photos and do some stargazing at night!

5. Don’t forget our neighbors

It’s amazing how a ferry ride can give you a whole new look at Maui. Take the ferry to Lanai or Molokai and rent a cottage. Renting a four-wheel car is ideal so that you can explore the islands’ gorgeous beaches.

As they say, “lucky… live on Maui.” Be sure to get out there and explore our own island this summer; it’s the perfect spot for a staycation!
