Celebrate World Whale Day

Maui Ocean Center has partnered with  Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary volunteers to host a World Whale Day celebration. Festitivites will kick off at the aquarium’s Māʻalaea Harbor Lookout, where guests can observe wild whale activity alongside volunteers. Guests can also participate in whale education stations and view one of three exclusive showings of In the Wake of Giants, a film featuring inspiring conservation footage from NOAA’s whale rescue team on Maui. Showings of the film will take place at Maui Ocean Center’s Makai Theater at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:30 pm. Whale activities and coloring sheets will be available for keiki, and fun marine-themed giveaways will take place throughout the dayWorld Whale Day celebrations are included with aquarium admission, and guests of all ages are welcome to participate.

Read Books Together

A new family resource from the library: book discussion kits. Spark meaningful family conversations by reading books together that nurture self-love, foster empathy, and empower children to make their voices heard. The Conscious Child: Family Book Discussion Kits aim to: 1) To celebrate diverse voices; and 2) help facilitate family discussions about racial equity, identity, and justice.

Included in each kit are discussion questions for each book and a list of further recommended reading.  Each kits focuses on timely subjects including racial equity, identity & belonging, joy & self-love, immigration & refugees, social justice & activism, and social emotional learning.

Attend Keiki Club

Queen Kaʻahumanu Center and Maui Ocean Center are joining forces to educate Maui’s keiki about Hawai‘i’s native and endemic marine life. The Maui Ocean Center’s Ocean Aloha series will be making its Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center debut during Keiki Club on the 3rd Saturday of each month through the summer.

Kicking off Saturday, February 19 between 10:00 – 11:00 am, a marine naturalist from Maui Ocean Center will engage junior ocean enthusiasts through entertaining and hands on activities at Queen Kaʻahumanu Center’s Play Area. Topics will focus on marine animals, including humpback whales, Hawaiian green sea turtles, sharks, and more. In addition to keiki-friendly marine conservation and sustainability information, attendees will have the opportunity to win giveaways.
