Raw juice always tastes so much sweeter and looks so full of nutrients. However, if it’s not pasteurized it poses a serious threat from E. coli. Apple juice is particularly susceptible because of growing and harvesting methods which can promote the spread of the bacteria. E. coli is passed through animal feces, particularly deer and cattle. Since manure and grazing are common methods to enhance tree growth in apple orchards, E. coli can be present in these fields. Also, apples which have fallen on the ground are more likely to be juiced because they can’t be sold as whole fruit and they’re thought to be sweeter. Furthermore, E. coli can live in the soil for up to 18 weeks.

E. coli can become deadly by affecting the blood and kidneys and is more effectual in young children due to their under development. Because children are fed apple juice at a young age, the danger of unpasteurized raw juice is a reality.
