“The keys to fire safety are fire hazard recognition, smoke alarms, then planning and preparation,” said Kapono Stupplebeen, Public Education Officer with the Maui Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau. “If we can recognize the fire hazard, we can address it before it becomes a problem. Smoke alarms give our families early alert to a fire, and having a fire escape plan and practicing it will make sure your family is well prepared in the event of a structure fire.”

Here are a few simple steps you can take:

1. Do a Home Fire Safety Survey. Recognizing and fixing the hazards or unsafe conditions that increase the risk of fire in your home is important.

2. Install or Test Your Smoke Alarms. Early detection is your best defense.

3. Make a Family Home Fire Escape Plan. Make it with your family and review it together to make sure that everyone that lives in the home knows the plan.

4. Practice the Plan. We recommend you practice a fire drill at home at least twice a year
