maui staycationMaui has been voted the #1 island in the world on numerous occasions. With abundant outdoor activities, enjoying a “staycation” here is simple to do. While there are many world-class resorts to choose from for a vacation that many dream of their entire lives, we are focusing on less expensive staycation ideas.

To create a staycation itinerary that the entire family will enjoy, you may start by having a brainstorming session with your spouse and kids. Here are some examples to get you started on the staycation of your dreams.

  • Camp, hike and watch the sunrise/sunset on Haleakala.
  • Camp on the beach. Check online for county permits and locations beforehand.
  • Spend the day on the “other side” of the island. If you live Upcountry, spend a full day on the West side, and vice versa. You could even trade houses with a friend on another part of the island for a day or two. This will give you a chance to explore the area with less time constraints.
  • Enjoy dinner at your favorite restaurant that offers kama’aina or happy hour specials.
  • Learn a new skill as a family. From outrigger canoe paddling to surfing to snorkeling, Maui offers countless opportunities to get outside together. Many companies offer lessons and equipment for those wishing to learn.
  • Rent a cabin in Hana and explore Maui’s tropical East side.
  • Spend the day at Iao Valley. Hike to the needle or other nearby trails, then cool off in the calming streams. Picnic pavilions are great places to barbeque with your ‘ohana.
  • Shop Northshore/Upcountry boutiques. Find one-of-a-kind art and handmade treasures at the many shops in Paia and Makawao. Support local artisans while enjoying your shopping spree.
  • Spend a day trying out different Maui food trucks.

However you choose to spend your staycation, focusing on your loved ones while relaxing together will create memories to cherish for years to come.
