Kuilima, meaning to join “arm-in-arm”, is Maui Ocean Center’s new community program that gives back to local non-profit organizations, schools, and other community organizations. In celebration of Maui Ocean Center’s 22nd Anniversary, the Aquarium is proud to present the 9th Annual Maui 5K, in partnership with Run for Fitness, on Sunday, March 1, 2020. The Maui 5K is a fun, healthy atmosphere open to parents, students, athletes, and non-athletes alike to raise funds for Maui County schools.
The Maui 5K seeks to promote health and fitness for Hawai‘i’s children by supporting Maui County schools’ ability to increase participation in youth sports and recreation programs. Proceeds raised through the run will provide additional funds to maintain or purchase new equipment for schools’ physical fitness, play, and athletic programs.
“We are honored to present this year’s Maui 5K run and rally together with our local community for a great cause,” said Toni Rojas, Maui Ocean Center’s Director of Marketing, “The Kuilima program is our way of saying mahalo to our kama‘āina ‘ohana who have supported us for the last 22 years.”
The 9th Annual Maui 5K begins and ends at the parking lot at the Maui Ocean Center (free parking). Start time is 7:00am following a brief safety announcement. There is no time limit to complete the race. At approximately 8:30am, a post-race celebration will be held with refreshments, awards ceremony, entertainment by DJ Teddy of Your Mix Maui, and a Critter Station hosted by the Maui Ocean Center.
Registration is currently open with over 200 participants already signed up. The Maui 5K features a timed 5K run, untimed 1Mile walk/run, and a virtual run option. Strollers are welcomed on the course but must start behind all runners. Deadline to submit paper applications and be eligible for a t-shirt is Saturday, February 15, 2020. Online registration is open until the day of the race. Packet pickup available at Adventure Sports Maui.
