Chinese New Year Celebration
Chinese New Year Celebration to be Held at County Building Friday, Feb. 3
Master Ben Seng Au and his Shaolin Arts Academy will again bring their cultural extravaganza to the County Building in celebration of Chinese New Year. The public is invited to attend this free event, with festivities beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017 on the front lawn of the County Building.
Firecrackers will open the event, followed by a martial arts exhibition and lion dancers. The lion dance performance will feature elaborate traditional costumes, drums, cymbals and other Chinese percussion instruments.
Red “li-shi” envelopes will be available at the event to “feed” the lions in the hopes of obtaining good luck during the new year. This coming Chinese year is the year of the Yin Fire Rooster, year 4715 on the Chinese Lunar calendar. Other Rooster years are 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993 and 2005.

BOOK TRUST BRINGS MAGICAL CELEBRATION TO MAUI
Leading literacy organization holds Arabian Nights themed fundraising event in Wailea, Maui, HI, February 4, 2017—Book Trust’s fifth annual fundraising Extravaganza, which will be held at Fairmont Wailea on Saturday, February 4th, has been custom-designed to delight all your senses! It will feature fire performers, belly dancers, and Mediterranean cuisine prepared by Executive Chef Tylun Pang & the Fairmont Culinary team. Additionally, guests will have the opportunity to bid on live & silent auction items including travel packages, fine art, activities and much more!
Run & Walk for the Whales
Pacific Whale Foundation’s annual Run & Walk for the Whales will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2017. One of Maui’s largest sporting events, Run & Walk for the Whales starts and ends at the Ma’alaea Harbor Shops.
Participants can choose between the Half Marathon (6:30 am), 10K run (7:00 am), 5K run (7:15 am), 4K walk (7:20 am), or a 1K run (7:20 am) for keiki ages 12 and under. Professional chip timing is included for runners in the Half Marathon, 10K and 5K, plus clock timing for the 4K Walk and 1K Keiki Run.
Medals and a pair of whalewatch tickets will be awarded to each of the top three male and female overall finishers in the Half Marathon, 10K and 5K, plus medals presented three deep in the male and female age divisions. All Half Marathon runners will receive a finisher medal, and Keiki 1K runners will receive a souvenir of their participation. All registered participants will receive an official Run & Walk for the Whales t-shirt.
There will be a post-race continental breakfast and awards ceremony for participants, along with valuable door prizes. Island-favorite Marty Dread will keep everyone entertained with live music and dancing. Participants are also invited to take a post-race whalewatch departing from Ma’alaea Harbor, where they will receive 40% off their cruise.
Pacific Whale Foundation’s marine education team is offering a morning version of Ocean Camp on race day for children ages 4 to 12. The program takes place from 6 am to 10 am at PWF’s Discovery Center in Ma’alaea and costs $25 per child. Pre-registration is required.
