2018 Junior Lifeguard Program

The Junior Lifeguard program was designed to train boys and girls ages 12 to 17 in lifesaving water skills and to develop an awareness of beach hazards and ocean conditions. It includes an introduction to CPR, First Aid and rescue board techniques with an emphasis on ocean swimming, paddle boarding and lifesaving skills. Participants will become familiar with First Aid and CPR techniques, while improving their health and fitness. 15 Participants max per session. Students who are not a returnee must perform and pass a swim test on registration day of 300 yards non-stop within 11 minutes.

Ages: 12–17

Districts: North, South, & West

Dates: Session I: June 11–15, Session II: June 18–June 22, Session III: June 25–29, Session IV: July 2-6, Session V: July 9-13, Session VI: July 16-20. Hana: June 4–8

Times: 9:00am–3:30pm

Cost: $20, space is limited

Registration: Registration forms will ONLY be available on registration days. May 12th, 2018 from 9:00am-11:00am. Please report to the Kokua Pool if interested in the North and South Districts.

Provides a safe and nurturing recreation program for the children of Maui County that addresses their physical, social, cultural, and educational needs. The PALS Program does this by promoting physical fitness and health by engaging children in a variety of sports and cultural activities. Cultural Activities: Music & Dance, Arts & Crafts, Language. Ethnic Customs: Folklore, Food, and More. Learn Fundamental Skills: Team Sports, Fun Drill Skills, Non-Competitive Sports & Games.

2018 Summer Junior Lifeguard Pool Sessions and Swim Camp Programs Announced

County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation announced registration dates and locations for the free 2018 Summer Junior Lifeguard and Swim Camp programs.

Program and camp sign-ups are taken on a first-come, first-served basis and registration is accepted until spots are filled. Parents are asked to register in person.

The following programs will be held 9 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday. Participants must take and pass a swim test.

  • Coach Spencer Shiraishi Memorial Pool programs include: Session I – Junior Readiness (ages 8-10) from June 18-22; and Session II – Junior Lifeguard (ages 11-14) from July 23 to Aug. 3. Register for either session 3 to 4:30 p.m. weekdays starting May 21 at the pool in Kahului.
  • Kihei Aquatic Center programs include: Session I – Junior Minis (ages 7-9) from June 4-8; and Session II – Junior Lifeguard (ages 10-14) from July 9 to 20. Register for either session 9 to 11 a.m. April 28 at the pool in Kihei.

The following swim camps will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday to Friday. Participants may be asked to do a swim assessment.

  • Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool Swim Camp for Level 3 swimmers will be held June 12-22. Register 8 to 9 a.m. May 19 at the pool in Wailuku.
  • New Wailuku Pool Swim Camp for Level 1 and 2 swimmers will be held June 26 to July 6. Register 8 to 9 a.m. May 5 at the pool in Wailuku.

Free Lifeguard Certification Program for Youth Set for June

The county Department of Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division will hold a free lifeguard certification program for ages 15 to 19 at the start of June in Central Maui. Please note that this is an American Red Cross lifeguard certification which will make it possible for attendees to apply for a lifeguard job with Maui County in the future.

“Kia‘i ola ‘opio: Young Lifeguards of the Future” will be held 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 1-3, with water skills at Coach Spencer Shiraishi Pool in Kahului and classroom work at the department’s small conference room adjacent to Sakamoto Pool in Wailuku.

Participants must take and pass a swim assessment test of a 300-yard continuous swim; treading water with hands under the armpit for two minutes and completion of a timed event with a dive into 10 feet of water to retrieve a 10-pound object and swim with it 20 yards back to start.

Space is limited to 14 participants. First-come, first-served registration is set for 8 a.m. May 19 at Coach Spencer Shiraishi Pool; assessment testing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Parent or guardian must accompany participant during registration.
