For Maui moms, this article could be titled, “Enjoy Your Maui Pregnancy,” since we are in the land of the “endless summer.” If you’re pregnant and wondering how to handle the heat and humidity, these tips may help:

Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 9.41.39 PMDrink plenty of water. During the warmer months, our bodies need as much help as possible with staying cool. Add on the reality that most homes on Maui do not have air conditioning, natural ways to cool off are essential. Simply drinking plenty of water, before you even feel “parched,” will help your body cool down, as well as cleanse your body of toxins and give you a little more energy.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. The maxi dress or skirt is your best friend when it comes to enjoying your summer pregnancy. The breathable fabric helps your blood circulation, which may help reduce swelling. Plus, after the baby arrives, you can add a belt to your maxi dress and continue wearing it while you get back into shape.

Head to the beach or pool. Swimming is a wonderful exercise while pregnant, as it helps reduce swelling and takes weight off of your joints, allowing you to move more freely. Water aerobics and toning is another option over land exercises.

Use organic coconut oil to moisturize your skin. This natural option will help with any chafing you may experience, in addition to keeping your skin soft and healthy.

Use peppermint oil to help reduce swelling in your hands and feet. Simply fill a small spray bottle with twenty drops of high-grade peppermint oil, then fill with distilled water. Spray whenever necessary.

Find air conditioning. Head to the public library, movie theater or museum to enjoy a cooler environment and a bit of relief from the heat.

Hopefully, you’ll find comfort and relief from these tips for your summer pregnancy. You can do it!
