As kuhina nui, Ka‘ahumanu created laws to protect her people from the foreign influences inundating the island in the early 1800’s. She recognized the advantages of literacy and encouraged it among ali‘i and commoner alike. In a single generation, Hawai‘i achieved one of the highest rates of literacy in the world. Join us in celebration of our Queen Ka‘ahumanu’s 252nd birthday on March 13 (details below).

QKC & ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu present A Birthday Celebration in honor of Queen Ka’ahumanu and her 252nd  Birthday | 6pm–7pm

This special annual ceremony will be conducted by the ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu Society including oli (chant), pule (blessing), history, hula, mele (song) and draping of lei on the Queen’s statue. 

The ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu Society will be the only group to drape lei on Queen Ka’ahumanu’s statue this evening.  Public is asked to be respectful of the Queen’s statue and surrounding areas.

Prince Kuhio Day (observed) celebrates Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, one of the best-known leaders in Hawai‘i’s history.  As a delegate, he authored the first Hawai’i Statehood bill in 1919.  Keiki (12 & under) are encouraged to participate in our fun and educational coloring contest at Keiki Koloring Korner today at Guest Services.
