The County of Maui Department of Parks & Recreation, Aquatics Division, is looking for a few good young men and women to take part in their 2013 Junior Lifeguard Program.JrLG_FltngBoard 1

Applications are available online at www.mauicounty.gov/juniorlifeguards and from now until April 30 at the following locations:

– all County of Maui lifeguard towers and swimming pools
– all Parks and Recreation facilities in Hana and Moloka’i
– the Lana‘i Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing (ask for Shelly)

Completed applications should be either emailed to Ocean Safety Training Captain Cary Kayama ([email protected]), faxed to the Aquatics Division office (FAX 270-6141), or if you live on Maui, dropped off at the Aquatics Division office located at War Memorial Gymnasium.

The Junior Lifeguard pool training program is being offered to all young adults ages 12 to 17, but for the ocean training segment participants must be at least 13 years old.

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and includes being able to pass a 300-meter swim test non-stop within 11 minutes. Parents or a legal guardian need to be present during the swim testing phase of the application process.

The training will be offered as week-long sessions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily at various locations on Maui, Moloka’i and Lana’i, between June 10 and July 19.

Training consists of familiarizing students with water safety skills, CPR, first aid, surf and rescue techniques, ocean swimming, paddle boarding and lifesaving skills. Although the program is free there is a suggested donation of $15, which can be made payable to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association – Maui Chapter.
