“The Art of Sphere” Contest to Benefit Local Schools,
Commemorate  Maui Ocean Center’s Sphere 1st Anniversary

On February 10, 2020, the Maui Ocean Center will celebrate the first anniversary of its Humpbacks of Hawai‘i Exhibit & Sphere. The Sphere not only saw over a quarter of a million viewers in 2019, but it also played a central role in hosting school field trips and educational programs. To celebrate this milestone, the Aquarium will host an art contest for Maui Nui’s schools with a chance to win funds to purchase new classroom supplies.

The Art of Sphere Contest is open to all Maui Nui schools grades K-12. Participating classes are asked to create a replica of Maui Ocean Center’s new Sphere and decorate it with their interpretation of the contest theme, Malama I Ke Kai (take care of the ocean). With a focus on sustainability, students are tasked with using as many eco-friendly materials as possible in constructing their art pieces.

The Maui Ocean Center will select three winning classes with prizes ranging from $250 to $1,000 to be used for school supplies. Each winning class will also receive a complimentary AquariumPLUS admission ticket to the Maui Ocean Center for its students and teacher.

Registration is currently open and will close on Friday, January 24th, at 12:00pm. Winners will be announced on Monday, February 10th at 12:00pm via social media. Submitted artwork will be on display at Maui Ocean Center until February 26th for the public to enjoy.
