Kupu is a 501c3 nonprofit organization which aims to empower youth to serve their communities through character building, service learning, and environmental stewardship. Kupu aims to train and equip young adults in Hawaiʻi and throughout the Pacific Rim with work skills, life skills, and knowledge to help them become successful as individuals and as part of the greater community.

AVAILABILITY: There are five (5) positions on Maui with the National Park Service at Haleakalā. One (1) team leader (must be 21 years of age or older with a clean driver’s abstract) and four (4) team members.

PROGRAM DATES: June 5 – July 28, 2017 (8 weeks)

POSITION DUTIES: Endangered Wildlife Management: The intern will assist with the monitoring of endangered native bird species and threat abatement. He/she will acquire basic knowledge and skills in these areas by working alongside professional Park staff. The intern must be able and willing to hike daily over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day trips on Maui. The intern will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation. Facilities Management: The intern will assist with gathering data on facilities and infrastructure, wastewater and Park engineering and construction activities. He/she will acquire basic knowledge and skills in construction, wastewater management, engineering, and other related areas. The intern will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation. He/she must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. The intern must be willing to participate in multi-day backpacking trips on Maui. Interpretation: The intern will help staff visitor center(s), answer visitor questions, work at contact stations using tools to help visitors connect with the resources, and other related duties. He/she must be outgoing, interested and skilled in working with people. The intern will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation. He/she must be able to hike over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day backcountry trips on Maui. Visitor/Resources Protection: The intern will learn about all aspects of Haleakalā National Park’s Visitor and Resources Protection program from a law enforcement and emergency operations standpoint. He/she will participate in ride-along’s with law enforcement officers and work with the Park’s Safety Officer to learn about Emergency Medical Services (EMS), search and rescue, traffic control issues, and visitor information and safety. The intern will learn how all of these elements combined help to keep our visitors safe and our natural and historical resources protected. The intern will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation. He/she must be able to hike over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day trips on Maui. Team Leader: The intern will participate in and help coordinate work projects for college level interns. He/she should have strong organizational skills and an interest in natural resources stewardship and management and environmental education. The Team Leader will be expected to track intern attendance and performance and other related duties as well as maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation. The Team Leader must be willing and able to transport interns safely to and from the Park and between out-of-Park work sites using a seven passenger mini- van. He/she must be willing and able to take a Helicopter B-3 aviation safety course. He/she must be able to hike over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day trips on Maui. Applicants must be able to meet driving abstract requirements and must be at least 21 years old by June 4, 2017. Other duties may include those that are assigned by your site manager or supervisor.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Haleakalā National Park extends from sea level to 10,023 feet. The summit area of the park receives anywhere from 40 to 150 inches of rain each year with the coastal area of Kīpahulu receiving over 80 inches. Temperatures at the summit can range between 30 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit at any time of the year. Work will be performed outside and weather can range from hot and sunny, to cold, wet, and windy. Weather changes rapidly, and interns need to be prepared for any type of weather at any time of year. This position is predominantly an outdoor position. Interns must not be afraid of heights. Position requires a great amount of physical exertion at times and must be able to traverse irregular terrain with up to 30 pounds of gear for distances of 3 miles or more. Backcountry duties include hiking to and from remote camps/base with backpacks up to 40 pounds over 3 -12 miles. Elevational differences in work areas may range up to 3,300 feet per day. Most of the field work is solitary with occasional interaction with other park staff. Office work will involve working in a crowded environment. Interns will be provided with work t-shirts. Raingear and other outerwear will be provided as needed. Interns are required to wear closed-toed shoes at all times (including office work). Interns will need to provide transportation to the pick up site to Haleakala National Park. Pick up sites will be in Wailuku and Makawao.

BENEFITS: • Team Members will receive $400.00* bi-weekly and the Team Leader will receive $800.00* bi-weekly. Living allowances are awarded at the above stated amount and are not dependent on hours worked.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: 1. Age – Applicants must be at least 17 years of age by June 5, 2017. 2. Diploma – Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or working towards one. 3. Citizenship – Applicants must be one of the following: a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien (due to AmeriCorps regulations). 4. Criminal History Check – Applicants are subject to a criminal history check. 5. Housing/Transportation – Applicants must have their own personal housing and transportation arrangements on-island.
