pumpkin decoratingDrinking pumpkin-spiced lattes, enjoying cool breezes in the air, and taking a trip to the pumpkin fields all bring that cozy feeling of autumn. Along with these experiences that are special to the fall season, you can create unique pumpkins with your keiki to place on the lanai (porch) or indoors as centerpieces. Here are a few decorative pumpkin ideas for your home this fall season.

Glittered Pumpkins

Materials Needed: pumpkins, colored glitter, spoon, spray adhesive, small paintbrush, brown craft paint, roll of craft paper, newspaper

Instructions: Protect your work surface by laying craft paper over the newspaper. Spray the top and middle portion of a pumpkin with spray adhesive. While the glue is still wet, use a spoon to sprinkle glitter over the sticky surface of the pumpkin. Allow to dry. Pick up the pumpkin and shake off any glitter that didn’t fully adhere. Set the pumpkin aside and fold the craft paper to pour the extra glitter back into its original container.

Succulent Garden Pumpkins

Materials Needed: pumpkins, spray adhesive, glue gun, glue sticks, moss, various succulent cuttings, craft paper, newspaper

Instructions: Protect your work surface, per the above instructions, and work in a well-ventilated area. Spray the moss in small sections with an even layer of spray adhesive. Quickly put sprayed moss on top of the pumpkin. Press down firmly to adhere the moss. Next, using your glue gun, glue the ends of the succulent cuttings into the moss. Hold each piece on the pumpkin for several seconds to ensure proper adherence. To maintain your succulent arrangement, mist daily after the initial 24-hour period. The arrangements may last up to two months. Then you may carefully cut off the top of the pumpkin and plant the succulent arrangement into an appropriately sized planter or in your garden.

Designer Thumb Tack Pumpkins

Materials Needed: pumpkins, silver or gold thumb tacks

Instructions: Decide on a design such as a flower, chevron, ocean wave, monogram, etc. Using a pencil, draw the design on the pumpkin. Then push in the thumb tacks with a small hammer or with your hand, depending on the difficulty.

These pumpkins are guaranteed to add character to your home.
