LET’S FLY KITES AT HUI NO’EAU
Ages 10+
Saturday & Sunday, April 28 & 29 at 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Bring the family and learn the story and origins of ho‘olele lupe (kite flying) from its conception and invention by Maui, the kupua and clever trickster who is credited throughout Polynesia for inventing the craft and practice! Students will examine traditional Hawaiian kite frame designs and construct their own kite using ‘ohe (bamboo) and various lashing techniques. Everyone will finish kites by stamping traditional and contemporary kapa designs onto pelon, mounting their fabric to frames, tying the pola (tail), affixing the bridal and kite string and then…we’ll fly your lupe! E ho‘olele lupe kakou! Let’s fly kites! This workshop is made possible with support from the Hawai’i Tourism Authority. Tuition: $65 Supply Fee: $15 Interested students can register online at huinoeau.com.
