Our People
Our people make the difference. Our caring, loving and safety conscious preschool teachers and support staff arrive each day ready to make a difference in the lives of our youngest members of Kama’aina Kids. Through the implementation of the nationally recognized Creative Curriculum, each classroom is arranged to allow children the opportunity to explore and investigate their surroundings. In addition, our people have made a committment to pursue accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National Early Childhood Program Accreditation (NECPA) which are the ultimate seals of approval.

Our Programs
Understanding that children have needs based on their age and stage of development, the Preschool Division offers the following programs:

Infant & Toddler (6 weeks to 24 months)
Two Year Old
Three & Four Year Old
First to Work
Our Places
Kama’aina Kids offers preschool programs in a variety of settings in order to ensure that we are in the neighborhoods where parents work and live. This ease of finding the location that best meets a family’s needs allows parents to maximize their time with their child. Some locations are far from the hub of downtown and others are close to the working communities we serve. Wherever we operate, our first goal is to build environments that are safe. Each site is licensed by the Department of Human Services and our stated goal is to meet or exceed all regulations by providing quality programming with trained staff while pursuing accreditation at each facility.

Preschool Curriculum
Helping each child learn
We help each child learn about themselves and the world around them throughout the day, whether during mealtime, outdoor play time or learning center time.

We develop curriculum based on the child’s individual interests, culture, and learning styles to meet their developmental needs in the major developmental areas: Social/Emotional, Cognitive, Physical, and Language . Through the implementation of the nationally recognized Creative Curriculum ©, each classroom is arranged to allow the minds of children the opportunity to explore and investigate their surroundings. The curriculum is aligned with the Hawaii Preschool Content Standards.

Organized classrooms
Classrooms provide distinct play/interest centers, including language/writing, library, art, dramatic play, science, music, blocks, math, social studies and table toys/puzzles. Age-appropriate materials are provided.

The learning environment offers multiple opportunities to explore, discover, and grow. The arrangement of the furniture and materials involves children in learning and caring for the classroom and what is in it.

Trained staff
Trained staff guide each child’s play throughout the day, supporting their learning and development of basic skills. The teachers make regular observations of the children’s’ development and skill level and creative activities to build upon the acquired skills. The staff shares the child’s developmental progress with the child’s parents/guardians twice to three times a year.

Goals of our Preschool Programs

  • Help children develop into caring, creative, thinking people, concerned about others and the world around them.
  • Help children develop a positive self image, the foundation on which social and academic success are built.
  • Guide children to develop confidence and independence by learning self-help skills.
  • Prepare every child to enter school, ready to succeed.

Infant Program

Our first priority is giving infants a safe, healthy, and loving environment.
Because every baby is unique, with different needs, rhythms and rates of development, we individualize eating, sleeping and planned activity times for each child.

Activities, routines, and care help build a picture of who the child is, what they can do, and what they think and feel. Learning trust and feeling valued is at the heart of our infant curriculum. We focus on learning about self, learning about feelings, learning about other people, learning about communication, learning to move and do, and learning about thinking.

The infants and toddlers learn through daily routines and activities that incorporate playing with toys, dabbling in art, imitating and pretending, enjoying stories and books, tasting and preparing food, exploring sand and water, having fun with music and movement, and going outdoors.

We value parental communication and know it’s vital in helping our staff best meet each infant’s needs. To help each parent, we’ll provide a daily chart, based on our observations of their child. We strongly believe that the best child care is a partnership between home and the Center.

Toddler Program

Our informal environment gives toddlers a variety of sensorimotor challenges. Toddlers enjoy singing, story time, dancing, walks and more.

Practicing known words and learning new ones helps children focus on language development.

Always on the go, toddlers get the chance to explore their environment and build their motor skills.

Two-Year-Old Program

Children grow and change dramatically from ages 24 to 36 months.
Small groups help two-year-olds handle these changes more easily. In groups, keiki practice and improve their social skills.
Children become more independent as their self-help skills grow.
Storytelling, finger-plays and songs help keiki develop verbal skills.
Kama‘aina Kids provides meals and snacks.
As children become ready, toilet training begins. Parents provide diapers and wipes.

Three to Five Year-Old Program

Children in this age group are ready for more challenges. We help them develop their rapidly expanding intellectual and physical abilities.

As kindergarten approaches, pre-reading and pre-math skills get more attention.

Late Born/PreK Program

Kindergarten awaits these new graduates and we provie special curriculum assessment tools to make sure they are ready for the challenge!

Is Your Child a Late Born?

Starting August 2014 your child must be 5 on or before July 31st to enter a public school for kindergarten.

Kama’aina Kids accepts late born keiki and provides additonal support!

  1. In line with DOE educational guidelines
  2. Offer full day programs 12 months a year from 6am to 6pm
  3. Tuition assistance specific to late born keiki
  4. Reduced tuition rate
  5. Special curriculum to prepare your keiki for kindergaten

Unlike DOE schools, our preschools are open year round from 6am to 6pm for majority of our Oahu preschools with Maui from 7:00am to 5:30pm. We have only 17 week days during the year that we are closed in observation of holidays, etc. Kama’aina Kids understands that for some families this will greatly impact their financial means. As a result we have applied for grants in order to provide tuition assistance specific to this age bracket and have reduced tuition.
