Public Open House to present Final Concept for Baldwin Beach Park Master Plan

The County of Maui, Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) invites the public to view the final concept for the Baldwin Beach Park Master Plan on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Paia Community Center.

People may drop in any time during the open house at the center located at 252 Hana Highway.

This is the third and last open house for the project. The final master plan concept will be shown at the open house, along with other supporting materials. During the open house, there will be many opportunities for participants to express their thoughts and to speak directly to the consultant team and to DPR staff.

Baldwin Beach Park is one of the largest beach parks (55.87 acres) in the county’s system of parks and recreational facilities, and is one of three major parks along Maui’s north shore that attract high levels of use. The park has never had a master plan and includes a considerable amount of undeveloped land that can be developed for recreational purposes. Some of the critical issues the plan will address are what kinds of activities and facilities are needed to meet the needs of county residents, how to address sea level rise, the size and location of parking, and managing overall use of the park.

DPR Director Karla Peters said: “It’s very exciting to see a final concept which provides a foundation for the future. There’s still more work to be done but we’ve taken the first step. I want to also acknowledge the work of the advisory committee because their ideas and experience were so helpful in getting us to this point.”

The master plan is being prepared with the assistance of a twelve-member advisory committee, made up of local residents who each bring their own perspective and expertise. The consultant team is headed by DTL, LLC and includes sub-consultants PBR Hawaii (landscape architects), Sea Engineering, Aina Archeology, and J. Uno & Associates.
