College for Kids begins its 5th year at UHMC, Laulima building under the Office of Continuing Education—the non-credit side of UH. Parents have been showing an increased interest in technology-themed weeks to give their children specialized & concentrated skills that go beyond what they may be able to get in their own schools. College for Kids has always taught to the whole child—no matter what the grade level. This past summer students in grades 6-8 got to experience putting together a computer from scratch, understanding the parts and how they function together. A field trip to the Maui Research & Technology Park got them to see a working model of a telescope along with visiting 3 other high tech companies.

Along with high tech comes the high touch of hands-on fun activities such as learning to ride a unicycle or cooking that opah filet to perfection at the Maui Culinary Academy’s prep kitchens. In addition, the Fashion Technology department gave students a grand overview of design in all aspects—clothing, logos, common items they’d find in their homes. Designs based on Hawaiian culture, tattoos and specialized layered applications made it onto their T-shirts and jeans. What’s next? See the calendar listing for Fall under Camps and the new Saturday Classes for Fall under Education. The theme? Digital Storytelling—just what kids want to do these days: Video, digital photos, storyboarding and all manner of experiences to be actor, writer, director, or videographer will be included. And yes, the high touch of magic tricks & illusions, chess and playing at improv drama rounds out the week.
