Wellness practices, both holistic and preventative, have evolved over time. Did you know that wellness can be traced back to ancient Indian and Chinese traditions from 3000-1500 B.C.? Today, wellness has evolved into a thriving movement of healthy-living, self-help, self-care, fitness, nutrition, and spiritual practices.

Wellness is the “active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health” (Global Wellness Institute). Holistic health is the care of your whole being, your physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs. It’s rooted in the understanding that these dimensions affect a person’s overall health, and being unwell in one can affect our health in others. The dimensions of wellness include:

● Social wellness – Connecting with others, finding community, and establishing support networks.

● Emotional wellness – Developing ways to cope with stressors and asking for help.

● Environmental wellness – Spending time in nature and other places, including spaces with others, that are pleasant.

● Physical wellness – Caring for your body to maintain good health now and in the future. ● Mental wellness – A state of mental well-being and belief that you can be resilient.

● Spiritual wellness – Searching for a higher meaning and purpose in life.

Family Hui Hawai`i

We offer many ways to explore the different dimensions of wellness. Our in-person Neighborhood Hui (groups) led by Parent Leaders offer families with young keiki weekly meetings in their community, for example, at a park like Giggle Hill, Haiku. Parents and caregivers share, connect and support one another through their parenting experiences and often find that they are on the same journey together. Virtual options to connect are offered through our talk story Parent Cafes, and in Mindful Mondays and Wellness Wednesdays in Wellness Hui to talk, learn yoga, breathwork and guided meditation techniques.

Through community partnerships we offer a variety of family-friendly experiences. For postpartum moms, we offer Hui through our Mama+Baby Yoga and Walking & Baby Wearing sessions. Families of all ages can join our Blue Zones Walking Moai to meet and walk for an hour once a week and much more. Reach out to join and learn about all of our FREE programming: [email protected] or Facebook: Maui County Family Hui Hawaii.
