Sunflower Power! A fuel of the future?

Pacific Biodiesel’s 115-acres of sunflowers is in full bloom. The project lies between Waikapu and Maalaea and can be viewed from the side of Kuihelani Highway. The biofuel crop is expected to yield more than 100 gallons of oil per acre. The high oil content of sunflower seed, often over 40%, makes it an excellent choice for a biofuel crop. The entire plant will be harvested and used. Maui’s strong winds are predicted to make the plants produce more oil. The first harvest for the crop is set for June so don’t wait too long to see them. Sunflowers make optimum use of light by tracking the sun. They move east to west throughout the day and turn back to the east at night. As the flowers develop, they lose their flexibility of movement. They are remarkably tough and beautiful.
