St. Johns Kula Festival

St. John’s Kula Festival will be held Sept. 23, 2017 from 9:00am to 4:00pm at 8992 Kula Highway. This is an upcountry tradition that local families look forward to every year. Besides lovely Keokea with the bicoastal views there will be live entertainment all day long  including: Kanekoa, recent Hoku recipients, the halau of Kumu Maka’ala Palmore, Joel Katz, Jamie Lawrence, Brian & Meryl, Chop Suey Jazz Band and Soul Kitchen. There will be ono local food including Portuguese Bean Soup, chow fun, Maui Cattle company burgers, vegan curry, homemade baked goods, fresh Kula produce, flowers, plants, gifts, crafters, silent auction, a quilt show and children’s games. This year there will be a $1 admission-or one can of food for the foodbank- with children under 10 years of age free. Each year the proceeds are shared with different local nonprofits. 1,000th Sea Turtle Released

Please join NOAA on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 1:00pm at Tavares Beach, Maui to see the turtle release and speak with sea turtle experts from NOAA Fisheries and Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute.

NOAA Fisheries will release the 1,000th sea turtle rescued and rehabilitated in the Hawaiian Islands. For more than thirty years, NOAA Fisheries’ stranding program in Hawaii has been responding to dead or injured sea turtles. This program has collected important information about population threats and impacts while treating injured sea turtles to help support recovery efforts. This particular rehabilitation case was not only the 1,000th sea turtle, but, also highlights the partnership with the Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute.
