The same great local event that’s been adored by shoppers for eight years will now have a new home!
The Maui Mompreneur shopping extravaganza supports nearly 60 vendors over two days. It’s a place to find handmade crafts, jewelry, art, baked goods and creative gift ideas every Spring and Winter.
For the first time, Maui Mompreneur is moving from its previous location at Maui Beach Hotel to the Pa’ina building at University of Hawai’i Maui College (UHMC) in Kahului, which houses the school’s popular culinary program. The events will happen on Saturday, December 17th from 4 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, December 18th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Many folks come to get all their Christmas shopping done in one spot! At UHMC, we can still be indoors, so the vendors will have A/C and still have tables set up for them,” explains event co-founder Luana HueSing-Ammasi. “But this year we’re able to bring in three food trucks, and the money that we pay to use the facility goes right back into the culinary program.”
That’s extra special for HueSing-Ammasi, who is a former student of UHMC’s culinary program. She founded Mompreneur in 2012 with friend and fellow vendor Jovina Ka’eo, aiming to make the vendor experience fun and worthwhile for local brands, while supporting the island’s economy and showcasing quality, local products.
“We know how much ‘ohana matters to us and our vendors. We went with evening hours on Saturday so it doesn’t conflict with sporting and youth events that sometimes occur on Saturday mornings,” explains event co-founder Jovina Ka’eo. “We didn’t want vendors to have to choose between missing out on Mompreneur or missing out on their kids’ events, so this way they can do both!”
Admission and parking are FREE, plus there will be a special Keiki Zone on Sunday in the student lounge. It’ll include crafts with Friends & Faire, a photo booth, face painting, a play area by Luxe Play and animatronic dinosaur rides by Kids 4 Science.
HueSing-Ammasi says the “midnight hustlers” need to feel the support for their skills, as they balance work life, family time and creative projects.
“We’re committed to Mompreneur because it’s the handmade crafters, artisans, and creators that sometimes get overlooked,” says HueSing-Ammasi. “We want them to know that we see them. We see their side hustles on social media. We see how they work a regular 9 to 5, come home, take care of their family, then work on their business till late in the night. We support them and want to give them a platform to showcase their talents and creations.”
