Earth Day Celebration Beach Cleanup

April 22, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

World Earth Day Breakwall Beach Cleanup sponsored by Manakai Swimwear in collaboration with Down the Hatch & Breakwall Shave Ice Co, and Malama Maui Nui.

April 22nd, 2018 marks the 48th year of World Earth Day celebrations demonstrating support and awareness of environmental protection. We invite the entire community of Maui to join us on the West side of Maui to malama our beaches in removing debris and spreading awareness about the ever-increasing presence of micro-plastics. Micro-plastics exist as a directly manufactured product called nurdles, and as fragmented parts of larger pieces of plastic debris. They are now estimated to make up the majority of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Learn more about these micro-plastics and what can be done about reducing the amount that end up in our oceans, on our beaches, and in the food we eat.

This beach cleanup also marks the celebration of several monumental milestones attained by the event sponsors.

Manakai Swimwear recently launched its new and improved 2018 Women of the Wild Collection using an Italian sustainable techno-fabric made exclusively from regenerated nylon 6 fishing nets and industrial surplus. Their pieces are all sewn in the USA ensuring ethical workplace conditions are met. All participants will be gifted 22% Off of this 2018 Collection as a sign of owner’s Kelley and Anna’s appreciation to those that give back to their environment.

Down the Hatch & Breakwall Shave Ice Co., a large supporter of the Maui community recently received their Ocean Friendly Restaurant Certification by the Maui Surfrider Foundation in recognition of their environmentally friendly operating procedures. These procedures include the elimination of single-use plastic items such as forks and straws, in addition to not using polystyrene (Styrofoam) containers or giving customers plastic bags. All participants will be gifted 50% Off a Down the Hatch entrée or Breakwall Shave Ice Co acai bowl.

Malama Maui Nui is providing guidance and the materials required to host a large-scale beach cleanup while the majority of their team, along with Maui Brewing Company, is hopping over to Moloka’i to tackle a huge mass of marine debris that is projected to make landfall near Mo’omomi.

Registration will begin at 8:00am and will take place at the white Manakai Swimwear tent in front of the Hale at Breakwall beach. All participants will be provided with the materials needed to remove large and small debris from the beach including gloves, bags, and micro-plastic sifters. Participants will be directed to stations along Breakwall/Sharkpit beach to ensure we make the biggest impact possible. The beach cleanup will conclude at 11:00 and all participants are invited to continue on to Down the Hatch to celebrate their efforts and continue their support of the incredible event hosts.

Once again all participants will be gifted 22% off of Manakai Swimwear’s new 2018 Women of the Wild Collection and 50% off of a Down the Hatch entrée or Breakwall Shave Ice Co. acai bowl to be used on April 22nd at the continued celebration at Down the Hatch located at 658 Front Street, Lahaina from noon-3:00pm.

For those that wish to continue their Earth Day participation with a Down the Hatch sponsored Scavenger Hunt and Triva Night.

This beach cleanup marks inaugural event of Manakai Swimwear’s quarterly hosted beach cleanups. Manakai Swimwear aims to honor the ocean not only by choosing to use sustainable fabrics made from ocean debris, but also to be an integral part of the environmental conservation community of Maui.
