Blue Zones Project Cooking Demonstration

The local community is invited to join the Blue Zones Project® for a cooking demonstration on Friday, January 12 at the Queen Kaahumanu Center. The cooking demonstration is part of a monthly series of events held on the second Friday of every month at Queen Kaahumanu Center’s Center Court and is hosted by Malika Dudley.

January’s demonstration features Sunny Savage, a wild foods advocate and owner/chef of the food truck Savage Kitchen Maui. Savage Kitchen focuses on serving five wildcrafted invasive species, and Savage has developed a dynamic interactive mapping app that assists people around the state of Hawaii to identify, harvest and prepare those five species. Savage is the author of Wild Food Plants of Hawaii and she is the energetic host of Hot on the Trail with Sunny Savage, an adventurous wild food cooking television series that now airs around the globe.

Savage comes from a long line of adventurers, and by 30 years old she had traveled to all 7 continents. These adventures included living in Antarctica for a year, working in the Dalai Lama’s temple in northern India, with Pygmy in the Congo, life aboard a sailboat for 3 years, and many more. She has a Bachelor’s of Science in Dietetics and a Master’s of Science in Nutrition Education.

Savage will be demonstrating how to prepare two dishes featuring haole koa (Leucaena leucocephala), a small invasive tree which grows abundantly on Maui. Recipe cards and free samples will be available while supplies last.

Blue Zones Project® will also be giving away prizes including wild food foraging tools, Blue Zones Project® t-shirts, gift cards, and National Geographic bookazines featuring Blue Zones founder Dan Buettner.
