ukusUkus, lice–whatever you call it, it’s really not all that bad and even the best of kids can get it. As a parent, you dread that letter home or call from the office telling you that one of the kids in class, or worse yet, your kid, has lice. Don’t worry, it happens.

Here are some ideas to ward off lice from setting up shop in your little one’s hair:

● Some parents swear that hairspray helps to prevent lice. It seems the lice do not like hairspray, so they leave the hair alone and move on to the next victim. Mothers are using this on their children’s hair after they’ve secured it in a bun or braids to help prevent ukus.
● An easy way to ward off lice is to add 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil to your regular shampoo bottle; the oil repels the lice.
● Use coconut oil in your and your children’s hair. Ukus don’t seem to like the smell of coconut and the oil can help suffocate any that may be lurking in the hair.
● Add tea tree oil to your little one’s conditioning spray.
● Make sure to tell your little one not to share hats with other kids because it can spread lice.

If you receive the dreaded call that your little one has lice, don’t panic. Just follow this recipe from LollyJane.com:

● Soak your hair in Listerine and cover with a shower cap for 2 hours.
● Rinse, then do the same with vinegar for 2 more hours. Be sure to use a clean shower cap.
● Rinse again, then wash your hair with your normal shampoo, but add 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil into your shampoo bottle.
● Condition with any brand of coconut conditioner. The cheaper, the better.
● Repeat 5 days later, and then 5 days after that. The reason for this is that lice lay nits that hatch every 5 days.
