Haiku Elementary School Launches First Private Foundation in Support of a Public Elementary School

May 4, Saturday, 6:00pm – 10:00pm, Maui Country Club

As Haiku Elementary School approaches celebrating twenty years of success with the Haiku Ho’olaule’a and Flower Festival, a group of committed philanthropists are hard at work behind the scenes launching a project looking towards the future… the Haiku Elementary School Foundation.

The Haiku Elementary School Foundation, founded in 2013, is an organization of supportive community and alumni members whose  Mail Attachment 1vision is to provide funds for capital improvement projects that will promote excellence in the educational and cultural experiences for all students at Haiku Elementary School.  Founding board members believe that the model of a public-private partnership to support academics in our communities is the solution to addressing the educational needs of our youth.

On Saturday, May 4, the Board of the Haiku Elementary School will introduce this Foundation to the community at a friendraiser at the Maui Country Club.  The STAR LIGHT * STAR BRIGHT Soiree will officially celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Haiku Ho’olaule’a and Flower Festival and launch of the Haiku Elementary School Foundation.  A fun and festive tribute to the community of Haiku…past, present and future…the event will be a timely exploration into the art of enrichment for ourselves and our children.  Be ready to mingle, have fun with many creative activities and then dance the night away.  Great food and libations, music by the Lily Meola Band! (with special Haiku Family musical appearances)

Haiku Elementary School, founded in 1928, is the heart of the Haiku community.  The elementary school, which currently has approximately 500 children enrolled in grades K-5, is recognized as one of the best elementary schools on the island.  The focus at Haiku Elementary School is on educating the entire child – intellectually, socially, physically and emotionally.  Merging traditional academics with arts, enrichment, physical education and gardening, teachers find innovative ways to teach through a variety of curricula, music, movement and more.

Haiku Elementary School has its share of challenges including space, maintenance, repair and program availability.  The school exceeds maximum capacity and is in dire need of additional spaces where students could receive more personalized instruction and attention.  Mail Attachment

In 2012, a passionate group of volunteers and donors came together with a simple intention: to pool their time, talent and resources to
create a Foundation that would support the facilities needs of Haiku School.  “The Haiku School Foundation got started because some caring community members who love Haiku were interested in helping our little school.  Their caring attitude spread to others and the vision of the foundation developed from there,” says HESF Board President Jennifer Oberg.  The Foundation’s Phase One will involve identifying maintenance and upkeep projects at Haiku Elementary School and raising money to address those crucial projects.  In Phases Two and Three, the goals are to create an updated master facility plan that will lead to the design and construction of a Multi-Purpose building for the campus.

“We are building a legacy of community action to support the future of our island- our children.  Come be a part of our exciting project,” says HESF Board member and retired Educational Officer Edwina Wilson-Snyder.   “With your support, we can further new projects that are so vital to our schools.  Please join us in making a real difference in the lives of Haiku’s keikis.”
