QUEEN KA‘AHUMANU CENTER ANNOUNCES QUEEN KA’AHUMANU’S 250TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST
Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, ‘Ahahui Ka’ahumanu and KPOA invite the community to celebrate Queen Ka’ahumanu’s 250th birthday on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 5:30 – 8:00pm.
Each month Queen Ka’ahumanu Center is dedicated to enhancing community education and awareness. The month of March celebrates Queen Ka’ahumanu’s 250th Birthday Legacy which includes activities by the ‘Ahahui Ka’ahumanu Chapter 4 Wailuku.
Commencing Sunday, March 11 through Sunday, March 18, the community can view over 130 Maui County student essays and coloring contest submittals in the south wing, first level (former Jeans Warehouse location) any time between 10am and 9pm (Sunday through 5pm).
On Friday, March 16 at 5:30pm, the ‘Ahahui Ka’ahumanu will lead Queen Ka’ahumanu’s 250th birthday protocol, including the ceremonial draping of lei. The ceremony will be conducted by the wahine (ladies) of the ‘Ahahui Ka’ahumanu Society including oli (chant), pule (blessing), history, hula (dance), mele (song) and draping of all lei on the Queen’s statue. Student essay and coloring contestant awards will follow. At 7pm, QKC and Sista Val of KPOA93.5 present Kama’aina Nights, featuring Halemanu.
The ‘Ahahui Ka’ahumanu Society will be the only group to drape lei on Queen Ka’ahumanu’s statue this evening. Public is invited to bring lei for draping to QKC Guest Services and are asked to be respectful of the queen’s statue and surrounding areas.
