Megan’s Meal of the Month

February, 2011

This month’s restaurant is Peggy Sue’s. A 1950’s-60’s malt shop*. It is a great place to listen to music and eat. There is a big juke box and at the booths’ there are mini- juke boxes to listen to old-fashioned vinyl records. You can sit outside, in a booth or at the counter. You can look at pictures of old-time stars, like Elvis Presley. It’s kid-friendly. Some kid meals are: your classic grilled cheese sandwich, called “Mellow Yellow”; peanut butter and grape jelly, the “Purple People Eater”; grilled hot dog on a bun, “Li’l Doggie in the Window” or “The Kids Burger” which is ½ of the King’s Burger on the regular menu.

All kids’ meals come with your entrée, fries, a Jr. Sundae and a small drink. I had the delicious BLT from the regular menu. It was served on a soft bun with sesame seeds, that gave the bun a yummy flavor, instead of plain toast. Your sides [on the regular menu] can be naturally cut fries, Mac-salad or green salad. If you like shakes or malts you’ve got to try the Gourmet Milk Shake instead of the Classic Milk Shake. There are many flavors like Banana Mac-crunch, Caramel Crème, Orange Cow and Chocolate [my favorite] and many more. You also get a 10% kama’aina discount. I recommend this awesome malt shop to everyone. So step in and go back in time!

Location: Azeka Place Mauka, 1279 S. Kihei Road, 875-8944

*Note: A 1950’s malt shop is what people in the 50’s-60’s called a diner like this.
