After the blissful, albeit, exhausting weeks of caring for a newborn pass, parents start craving a social life for themselves and their new bundle of joy. As new parents, transitioning into different social circles can feel daunting. When you’re ready to have some better conversations and connections beyond what’s between your home’s walls, here are a few ideas.

Express Yourself

If you enjoy doing crafts with your kids, ArtLAB Maui offers an open studio-style hang-out time for children and caregivers. Ideal for babies through age 5, a variety of sensory-based activity stations are featured. Coffees and conversation are welcome and encouraged for parents! The Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center also offers a sensory class for ages 1.5-5 years old.  For your tiny dancer, Kihei Dance Connection offers Mommy and Me movement classes for ages 2 – 3.5. Momentum Dance in Kahului also offers a toddler time and a parent Dance with Me class. Check retail centers for weekly free keiki craft events as well.

Get Moving

Mix getting fit with making new friends by joining an exercise group of fellow moms. Fit4Mom coordinates prenatal and postnatal fitness classes for new moms like Stroller Strides and Fit4Baby classes. The gymnastics program at Island Athletics offers a parent and tot class for 18 months – 3 years. Open to any able-bodied guardian and child, the class incorporates basic motor skills, balance, coordination, and social interaction. Ultimate Air hosts a toddler time from 10am to noon on Monday, Friday, and Saturday. This is not only a safe time for your toddler to jump, but it’s also a great time for them (and guardian!) to meet friends. If you want to share your love for soccer, Vertical Sports offers a mommy and me soccer class. Visiting any of the County parks is also a great way to bring your toddlers outdoors and meet friends along the way.

Storytime

Storytimes are held throughout the County’s libraries and are a perfect introduction to an educational setting for toddlers. Kids are asked to gather quietly to listen, interact with the reader, and complete a themed craft. Be sure to pick age-appropriate storytimes and other events on librarieshawaii.org. Go weekly and you’ll soon recognize the regulars that may become your bestie for life.
