Maui Ocean Center’s Kauhulu Cultural Talk Series to Debut 2020 with Limu Talk

Kumu Lei Wann to talk about limu and ‘Āina-Based Education on Thursday, January 30

Maui Ocean Center is proud to host its new Kauhulu Hawaiian cultural talk series on Thursday, January 30, 2020, in the Sphere theater. Kumu Lei Wann of Kaua‘i will share the Ko‘olau moku’s (district) rich history of limu (seaweed) and how that knowledge is being passed down through ‘Āina-Based Education programs.

Kumu Lei Wann is the Kumu Alaka‘i for Papa 3 of the Kawakini New Century Public Charter School (NCPCS), a new school immersed in Hawaiian language and ‘Āina-Based Education programs. Kawakini NCPCS’s Manokalanipo curriculum is taught from K-12 with each grade level studying a specific moku of Kaua‘i. Kumu Lei Wann focuses on the Ko‘olau moku’s rich history of limu, teaching students how to grow and restore limu as well as how to malama (care for) the ocean’s ecosystems.

Kumu Lei Wann’s talk will mark the first Kauhulu of 2020, Maui Ocean Center’s new after-hours Hawaiian cultural talk series. Kauhulu translates as the gathering of fish rising from the depths of the ocean to the surface. This series brings together the brilliant minds of the Hawaiian community to share their knowledge of cultural topics throughout Hawai‘i.

Kauhulu takes place in the Maui Ocean Center Sphere and is free to attend with reservations. Doors open at 5:30pm and talk will take place from 6:15pm to 7:15pm with a brief Q&A to follow. Event includes mele (music) and complimentary mea‘ai pono (light healthy foods) while supplies last. Exhibits will not be open.
