Free ocean-themed activities offered as relief amid coronavirus impacts

Despite closing to the public in response to the coronavirus pandemic, Maui’s top attraction and world-class Aquarium will continue to share the beauty and wonder of Hawai‘i’s marine life through its new Ocean Education Classroom.

Recognizing the impacts of school closures and social distancing across the world, a small team of Maui Ocean Center staff has volunteered their time to provide the public with free, downloadable activities to learn about Hawai‘i’s culture and marine life. Created in collaboration with Cultural Advisor Dane Maxwell and Kupu Productions, the Ocean Education Classroom is an online community resource that includes videos and activities featuring a Hawaiian word of the week, story readings, coloring sheets, crafts, and more.

The Ocean Education Classroom aims to provide families with opportunities to learn about Hawai’i’s marine life from home, especially in times of school closures and social distancing. Maui Ocean Center plans to release content weekly beginning March 23, 2020. Activities are appropriate for grades K-5 and will be available at mauioceancenter.com or on social media (@mauioceancenter).

“The Ocean Education Classroom initiative underscores the passion and commitment that our team members have for the community and our ocean.” said Evan Pascual, the Aquarium’s Marketing & Public Relations Coordinator, “It is an honor to work among this passionate group of individuals, and ultimately, to still be able to share the wonder of Hawai‘i, its culture, and marine animals with you. We hope to offer any sort of relief in the face of this global crisis.”
