In recognition of World Oceans Day on June 8th, the Aquarium is holding a coloring and poetry contest for children ages 3-12.  Children can submit a drawing or poem that best represents the theme “Hawai`i’s Unique Oceans” for the chance to win an Annual Journey Pass to the Aquarium!  The last day to submit an entry is Tuesday, May 31, 2011.

See, touch and learn about sea stars, urchins and sea cucumbers!  Join a trained Ocean Naturalist at Discovery Pool every Friday and Sunday at 11:30am for an exciting hands-on presentation.  Learn the Hawaiian names of endemic marine animals, their uses in old Hawai`i and more.

Fascinating facts about sharks and sea turtles are revealed on this fun and interactive tour!  Join a trained Ocean Naturalist guide, sneak a peek behind-the-scenes at the Aquarium, and participate in a supervised feeding of sharks and sea turtles at the Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon exhibits.

Cost is $10.00 per person plus aquarium admission.  Reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling (808)270-7088.

Meet the Diver tour“Meet the Diver” Tour

Meet a member of the Aquarium’s talented curatorial team and see what it takes to care for the animals and exhibits at Maui Ocean Center.  Guests will learn about the important daily duties of divers and aquarists with a sneak peek behind the scenes, participation in supervised feeds of animals at Turtle Lagoon and Hammerhead Harbor and more.

Wear Jeans for JapanWear Jeans for Japan

Friday, May 13

 

On Friday, May 13th Maui Ocean Center will participate in the “Wear Jeans for Japan” campaign, along with the County of Maui and other local participating businesses.  On this day, Aquarium employees will be able to wear jeans to work and make a donation to support those affected by the recent earthquakes and tsunami in Japan.  Collection boxes will be stationed throughout the Aquarium and visiting guests who would like to donate may do so as well. Along with jeans, Aquarium employees may wear the “Ganbare Nippon” charity t-shirt sold in the Maui Ocean Treasures store to work on May 13th.  One-hundred percent of the t-shirt proceeds will be donated to the Hawaii Red Cross.

Learn about Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles in an up close and personal setting at the Turtle Lagoon.  This interactive program is hosted by the Aquarium’s curatorial team.  Guests will learn about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles from the team that cares for the animals on a daily basis. This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Hangin’ with Honu

Friday, May 27 | 11am-2pm

 

Enjoy another opportunity to learn about green sea turtles during Hangin’ with Honu. A special guest speaker, accompanied by a green sea turtle, will host a casual turtle talk at the Turtle Lagoon.  The story behind the turtles at Maui Ocean Center along with other interesting turtle facts will be discussed. This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.
