Keiki Can Read to a Therapy Dog at Makawao Library

Yoshi and Jasmine (3)

Jasmine, a young reader (left), reads a story to Yoshi with the assistance of Tracy Grafmire, an Assistance Dogs of Hawaii Therapy Dog Handler, at last year’s program at Makawao Public Library.

“PAWS for Reading,” a free program for keiki in grades 1 through 5, will be offered at Makawao Public Library on the first four Saturdays in March 2014.  The programs will be conducted on March 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Tutoring Room.

Assistance Dogs of Hawaii, a non-profit organization that provides people with physical disabilities specially-trained dogs to assist them in living more independent lives, will present a program which is said to improve children’s reading and communication skills.  Reading to a Therapy Dog can help build a keiki’s reading confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and is a lot of fun.

Parents should contact the Library to sign up their children for 15-minute reading sessions.  Pre-registration is required.  All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.

Makawao Public Library is located at 1159 Makawao Avenue.  For more information or to sign-up for a reading session, please call the Library at (808) 573-8785.

A mysterious criminal mastermind has stolen one of the pyramids in Egypt, sparking a fit of jealous envy in evil genius Gru. Ever since Gru was a little boy, he dreamed of going to the moon. Now, if he can just build a rocket and get his hands on a powerful shrink-ray, he can cement his reputation as the greatest thief who ever lived by stealing the Earth’s satellite right out of the sky. But When Gru realizes that his upcoming moon mission clashes with a ballet performance by his adopted daughters, he must decide what’s more important: being a good prent or maintaining his nefarious reputation.
