The Aquarium will also participate in the County of Maui’s first storm drain stenciling project and is currently seeking volunteers to assist in this new environmental campaign.
World Oceans Day is a global celebration of the ocean while calling upon communities, businesses, and governments to work together to ensure a thriving ocean for future generations. This year, Maui Ocean Center will host five local artists who will display their ocean art throughout the Aquarium’s exhibits from 10am-3pm. Participating artists include Brian Heustis of Maui Fish Printing (gyotaku fish printing), Todd Hummel (photographer), Anthony Simone (photographer), Jaz Kelber (keiki painter), and Francine Walraven (freelance artist).
Artwork will be available for sale with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute.
Maui Ocean Center will also participate in the County of Maui’s storm drain stenciling project also happening on Thursday, June 8th, from 9am-12pm. Maui Ocean Center is looking for volunteers to join staff members to help the County paint awareness messages of “No Dumping – Drains to Ocean” at storm drain locations along High, Main, and Market Streets. This campaign seeks to raise awareness about keeping pollutants from entering storm drain systems which ultimately lead to streams and the ocean.
