Chinese New Year Festival

Lahaina Restoration Foundation invites the public to the Wo Hing Museum & Cookhouse (858 Front Street) on Friday, January 31st for an evening of cultural art activities that pay tribute to the year of the rat for Chinese New Year. The museum will be open between 10 am and 7 pm with free admission.

The Chinese cultural celebration at Wo Hing Museum & Cookhouse features a variety of free activities between 2 and 7 pm. At 2pm, Dr. Busaba Yip and special guest Dennis Ryan, will present the history of the festival and the story of the pig: The first Chinese dragon. Repeat presentation at 6pm.

From 4 to 7 pm in the museum yard, kids can make Year of the Rat paper bag puppets. Cultural activities for all ages include: Chinese calligraphy with Rev. Takayuki Meguro, the art of Chinese knot tying with Brenda Wong, learn & play mahjong with Paula Maki and add your wish to the Wishing Tree.

The highlight of festivities will take place at 5pm with a blessing by Au’s Shaolin Arts Society, followed by the lion dance, where guests can “feed” the lion with lai see envelopes for good luck. The procession will move down Front Street and conclude at Campbell Park (adjacent to Baldwin House).

Lāna‘i Fifth Fridays

Don’t miss the Lāna‘i Fifth Friday Town Party from 5:30-8:00pm every fifth Friday of the month on Lāna‘i in Dole Park. Enjoy FREE live entertainment, good food and fun activities for the whole family.

The Friday Town Party event will feature over 25 vendors and participants set up around Dole Park, including food booths and restaurants serving up local favorites, as well as several music and entertainment venues. 

During the event, local businesses displaying the Lāna‘i Fifth Friday logo will offer discounts and specials. Shoppers should save their receipts to receive a free waterproof Lāna‘i bag or tee shirt with total purchases of $100 or more at participating merchants, or buy the bag for $5 with purchases totaling $50 or more. Receipts can be turned in at the Chamber booth.

For those coming from Maui to experience Lāna‘i Fifth Friday, the Chamber has teamed up with Expeditions Ferry to provide a special complementary late-night return ferry. Guests wanting to take advantage of this special should call Expeditions (808-661-3756), in advance, to purchase their Maui to Lāna‘i one-way ticket, and to reserve a seat on the return ferry, which will depart Manele Harbor at 9:45 pm. 

On the evening of the event, those with reserved seats on the late-night ferry should stop by the Chamber booth to pick up their complimentary late-night return ferry ticket. Shuttle service between Manele Harbor and Dole Park, Lāna‘i City will be available through Rabaca’s Limousine Service for $10 each way or $20 round trip (cash only).

Join the Makawao Community Association in celebrating Chinese New Year! Au’s Shaolin Arts will be performing lion dancing in front of the Matsui building is set for Saturday February 1st at 10:00am. This year is the Year of the Rat and it is the first of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. It is considered to be auspicious because it brings about the beginning of a 12 year cycle.

The rat is smart, cunning and adaptive and accomplishes its goals by using the “Journey of a 1,000 miles begins with the first step” philosophy. The Rat Year will be a strong year for making family bonds stronger or settling long family disputes. Kung Hee Fat Choy!!
