The Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety’s annual Big Shows hosts Maui’s largest firefighting and fire safety demonstrations.

There are two separate shows – one in Kahului and another in Lahaina on a different date. It is a free event for the whole community to enjoy.

The shows themselves include safety messages, including how and when to call 911, the importance of fire alarms, knowing two ways out of every room, having an escape plan and practicing it, not playing with matches and lighters, stop drop and roll, stay low and go, and other fire safety tips that will keep your family safe. Both shows also include a visit from Sparky the Dog and Smokey the Bear, Air One helicopter, demos of Turnout Gear & HAZMAT suits, and demos from the different trucks. The Rescue unit displays equipment and takes apart a car using the “Jaws of Life,” the Engine unit does a fire attack demo with a prop using live fire, and the Ladder unit displays ladder and sprays water from its highest point – and usually, the kids run out and cool off on the field.

This year’s shows will once again be held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, during the second half of October. They are free and open to the public.
