Kihei Public Library will offer four free programs in October 2012:

*       October 6 (Saturday), 10:30 a.m.-noon in Lobby – “Discover UH Graduate and Undergraduate Degree Programs Available on Maui.”  Adults are invited to attend an informational table presentation conducted by University of Hawaii Center, Maui staff members.  Learn all about the various degrees offered to Valley Isle residents through the Center’s distance learning program such as an Executive MBA degree, Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management, post-baccalaureate Certificates in Education, and bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration, Accounting, Justice Administration, Nursing, and Psychology.  The UH-Center, Maui offers selected programs that are available at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, West Oahu, and Hilo campuses.  Nearly all courses are taught online via the Internet, making it convenient for both business professionals and students with families because the coursework is accessible 24/7.

*       October 17 (Wednesday), 3:30 p.m. in Children’s Area – “Classics Illustrated with Papa Lopaka.” Join Papa Lopaka (Robert DeVinck) who will present a dramatic reading of his “Classics Illustrated” comic book of “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley.  There will be a brief discussion, question-and-answer session, and Lopaka will encourage children to read the original book. The program is recommended for ages 8 to 12 and will include light snacks provided by the Kay A. Edwards Memorial Fund.  Papa Lopaka is a writer, English literature scholar, and long-time reader of classic books.

*       October 20 (Saturday), 10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in Children’s Area – “Saturday Matinee: Scooby Doo’s Original Mysteries.”  Join Scooby Doo, the lovable Great Dane, along with teenagers Shaggy, Freddy, Daphne, and Velma as they solve mysteries investigating haunted castles, ghost towns, and alleged otherworldly beings in these mildly-scary cartoons, just in time for Halloween!  The movie is suitable for ages 5 and older; all children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.  Free popcorn and bottled water will be provided by the Kay A. Edwards Memorial Fund.

*       October 23 (Tuesday), 6:30 p.m. in Children’s Area – “Having Fun with Alzheimer’s.”  Adults are invited to meet Michael and Margaret O’Brien, the authors of “Having Fun with Alzheimer’s: A ‘How to’ Book for Caregivers,” who will share their experiences as caregivers of a loved one with Alzheimer’s and offer suggestions on how to cope with the many challenges of caregiving.  Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the book while supplies last.  Michael is a World War II veteran and author of “Short Stories from A Long Life” and “India-Burma-China World War II 1943-1945.”  Margaret co-authored the book “Having Fun with Alzheimer’s” with her father Michael.
