Haleakalā Waldorf School believes that quality begets quality, and that education is an act of transformation. Combine intellectually curious students with outstanding teachers in a program that is both academically challenging and personally supportive, and the results are extraordinary. We consciously offer a substantial, developmentally based program to our students building a solid foundation layer upon layer as it progresses through the years.

• Academics— At Haleakalā Waldorf School, the curriculum takes an interdisciplinary approach with a focus on experiential learning.  We provide a classically well rounded curriculum (history, math, language arts, the sciences, foreign languages and Hawaiian studies) encompassing both depth and breadth.

• The Arts— Academics come alive conveyed through an artistic medium.  We seek to cultivate a life long love of learning by integrating our rigorous academic curriculum with the arts — visual, dramatic, music, and movement.  Children’s imaginations and curiosity are engaged as each subject area is felt and experienced in addition to being contemplated intellectually.

• The Whole Child— The pursuit of intellectual growth is complemented by a concern for the moral, physical, psychological and aesthetic development of each student. Community service, affective education, performing and visual arts, physical fitness and athletics are all integral parts of the Haleakala Waldorf School curriculum.

• Outstanding Faculty— Haleakalā Waldorf School students are inspired and supported by an exceptional faculty. Our teachers are the heart of the school. They provide context, content and coherence to the learning environment, serve as role models and shape students’ lives forever.

The Haleakalā Waldorf School experience is as extraordinary as your child.  Our vision is for our students to blossom into young adulthood fulfilling their own individual potential and preparing to take their places as creative, self-directed members of our global society.  They learn to think independently and work collaboratively. They develop confidence, courage and tenacity. They acquire leadership skills and the desire to make a difference in the world.  Waldorf education is an education of the complete human being.

Haleakalā Waldorf School Programs

Early Childhood

Haleakalā Waldorf School offers classes for children from birth through six years. In a nurturing, home-like environment with beautiful outdoor and indoor facilities, teachers focus on the development of the imagination, physical movement and socialization skills.

Grades 1-8

Class teachers take students from 1st through 8th grade for the “main lesson” in a two-hour morning period followed by practice sessions in math, reading, language arts, painting, recorder playing, and drama. Special subject teachers offer Japanese, Spanish, Hawaiian, Music, PE, Handwork, Gardening and Eurythmy.  Middle school specialists include science, math, language arts, and art.

High School

The Haleakalā Waldorf School is a rebirth of the Renaissance ideals in modern form.  The approach to learning is one that is hands-on interdisciplinary collaborative artistic and applied to “the real world.”  All students participate in all subjects regardless of aptitude because this participation will awaken and form the capacities that every human being needs.  Though a student may be more gifted in math and another in science or history the mathematician needs the humanities and the historian needs the math and science in order to comprehensively shape our future.  The result is a rigorous academic experience combined with the highest level of morality and ethics meaning and beauty.
The themes for each grade are:
9th grade—Finding the Balance Between Extremes
10th grade—Developing the Tools of LanguageAestheticsand Reason
11th grade—Training the Power of Analysis
12th grade—Synthesizing and Finding Meaning

The Waldorf Approach

Why Waldorf?

“By the time they reach us at the college and university level, Waldorf students are grounded broadly and deeply and have a remarkable enthusiasm for learning. Such students possess the eye of the discoverer, and the compassionate heart of the reformer which, when joined to a task, can change the planet.”
—Arthur Zajonc, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Physics, Amherst College

Waldorf has become the largest independent, non-denominational education movement in the world, with over 900 schools and an additional 600 early childhood programs in 83 countries. What accounts for this widespread interest?

Following the indications of Austrian scientist and philosopher, Dr. Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), Waldorf education employs a fully developed approach that addresses the whole child: head, heart and hands. The integrated curriculum presents the right thing at the right time, moving the developing child to learn and grow in an atmosphere of respect for each child’s uniqueness. The children are taught in the context of their own stage of development with the understanding that subjects must be brought to them in different ways at different ages through an interdisciplinary approach. Children are not rushed, but encouraged.

What is a Waldorf High School?

Waldorf Schools form the fastest growing independent school system in the world with over 1,000 schools internationally. Haleakala Waldorf High School’s curriculum offers rigorous challenges in math, the sciences, literature, and the humanities. Our students are introduced to the greatest and best of cultural achievement; they study the great ideas that shaped civilizations, experience the beauty of the great theorems of mathematics, feel the transformative power of the arts, and explore the wonder of the natural world in science.

Each student is on a unique journey as Haleakala Waldorf High School endeavors to educate the entire human being – mind, body and spirit. Students are encouraged to be well-rounded, to become reflective thinkers, to be able to work in a variety of disciplines, to unlock imagination, and to cultivate creativity. Waldorf education is a rebirth of Renaissance ideals in modern form.

“Whatever an education is, it should make you a unique individual, not a conformist: it should furnish you with an original spirit with which to tackle the big challenges; it should allow you to find values which will be your road map through life; it should make you spiritually rich, a person who loves whatever you are doing, wherever you are, whomever you are with; it should teach you what is important, how to live and how to die.”  – John Taylor Gatto
