Applications are now open on our website for all 3 of our Fall 2013 youth programs!  Read below for changes we are making this year.  Last semester we filled all programs and had waiting lists for some, so please don’t wait…apply now!

Huliau Environmental Filmmaking Club

Applications are now open for the 4th school year of our most popular and longest-running program.  The program begins Monday August 19th and meets every Monday from 3-5:15plus off-site filming days.

Changes to our Huliau Environmental Filmmaking Club in the 2013-14 school year:
Fall 2013: The Fall 2013 program is open only to students who have previously participated in our filmmaking program.  Students can choose between working with our first year-long (August-May) film team on a topic chosen by their group, or working on one of three film topics chosen by Maui County Office of Economic Development (OED) for just fall semester (August-December).  You will be asked to choose when you fill out the on-line application.  The year-long film team has a program fee of $100 and the OED topic film teams have no program fee.  New students can participate in our Hui Laulima program in the fall and will be given priority admission to our spring semester filmmaking program.
Spring 2014: The Spring 2014 program will consist of three films teams where topics are chosen by each group and priority is given to students who have never participated in our filmmaking program.  There will also be one film team open to returning students on a topic chosen by OED.  Applications for the spring semester will open in December.

Huliau Youth Leaders
Huliau Youth Leaders is an environmental leadership group open to grades 11-12 from all Maui schools where students plan their own environmental projects and events.  The group meets the first Tuesday of every month from 3:30-5pm at the Hawaiian Canoe Club and also meets at other times to participate in service projects and/or overnight trips. To see examples of projects the Youth Leaders completed during the 2012-13 school year, visit their website here.  The program will begin with a retreat/planning day in August (to be scheduled by students) and regular Tuesday meetings will continue in September.  The program is only open to 8 students who will be selected based on their applications and/or performance in past programs.  Both returning and new students are welcome to apply.

Hui Laulima

This fall we are expanding our Hui Laulima program to cover more environmental topics and work with more organizations, businesses and community groups!  Our 2012 programs focused on the connection between mountain to sea environments and issues relating to watershed health, invasive species and the Hawaiian ahupuaʻa system.  This fall, we have one session focusing on these same issues but are also adding sessions on marine issues, recycling/waste disposal, food production/agriculture and renewable energy.  Students attending all 5 sessions will get a great introduction to environmental issues on Maui and have the opportunity to do hands-on activities and service projects with at least 10 environmental organizations, farms and local businesses.

The new 5 session program will take place on Wednesday afternoons (2:30-5:00) and Saturdays (6 hours) in late September and early October.  We are currently working on confirming the schedule.  Priority will be given to students who wish to complete all 5 sessions.  However on a space-available basis, students may participate in the sessions they are most interested in.  Students who complete at least one session of Hui Laulima this fall, will also be given priority admission to our spring Huliau Environmental Filmmaking Club where they can make a film on a topic of their choice.  The program fee is $10 per Wednesday session, $20 per Saturday session, or $50 for all 5 sessions.  The program fee includes snacks and transportation.

Sponsors Needed for Hui Laulima!

You can sponsor an afternoon or full day field trip for up to 15 Maui Youth from all schools on Maui.  You can also choose which topic you wish to sponsor. Donors will be recognized in program announcements in our e-newsletter and social media and to students on the day of the field trip.  This is a unique opportunity to provide Maui youth with a day of hands-on learning about local agriculture, watershed health, marine issues, renewable energy or waste disposal and recycling.  Click on one of the two buttons below to donate now.
