View a New Art Exhibition
During this year coping with Covid-19, many people turned to art as a salve. This may be why the Hui No’eau received a record number of entries for this years’ Juried Exhibition. The Hui No‘eau Annual Juried Exhibition is a highly selective and prestigious exhibition that showcases new work created by a talented community of local and mainland artists. Open to works in all media, this exhibition offers an opportunity for artists to share their ideas, inspirations, and creativity in a public gallery space. This year, the Hui welcomed Jurors Dick Nelson & Kari McCarthy to offer their unique perspective and shape our 2021 exhibition. With 85 pieces selected from 287 entries, the exhibition represents a truly remarkable collection of works. Congratulations to all the exhibiting artists! Read or Write a Poem
If you haven’t seen or read Amanda Gorman’s poem The Hill We Climb, now is your chance here. At age 22, Gorman is the youngest inaugural poet in United States history, and no matter your politics, it’s a thrill to see our youth engage in art and activism at such a remarkable level. Poetry is a wonderful way to hone your reading and writing skills at any age, so explore the library, a local bookstore, or online for more poetic inspiration. BONUS: The International Peace Poem Project is now accepting poetry entries from students for the 2021 peace poem contest until the end of Black History Month in February. Learn an Instrument
Have you noticed that your child appreciates music and wants to take a step beyond banging pots and pans? Practicing an instrument is a perfect way to make the most of time spent at home while restrictions remain on the island due to Covid-19. Bounty Music in Kahului has been part of the community for over 40 years and has some of the best musicians on the island teaching everything from ukelele, piano, and drums. Also, Kupono Music Studio offers private lessons and has extensive experience working with children.
Apply for a Scholarship
The Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem Foundation is excited to announce that there will be two or more $2,500 scholarships for high school seniors attending a Maui county high school in the 2020 – 2021 school year. Applicants must be attending a college or university in 2021 to be eligible.
The 2021 IWMMF scholarships are made possible with the generosity of the Harbaugh Foundation and Scott and Audrey Blum, who alongside the IWMMF believe in the importance of perpetuating academic success and pursuits of knowledge.
